First: amber or red?

An amber engine management light means the car’s computer has logged a fault that needs looking at soon — you can usually drive gently to a garage, but don’t ignore it for weeks. A red light, or an amber light that’s flashing, means stop as soon as it’s safe: carrying on can turn a small fault into an engine-damaging one.

The light itself never tells you what’s wrong — it’s a cover-all for hundreds of possible fault codes. That’s why the fix starts with reading the code properly, not swapping parts on a hunch.

The most common causes we see

In London the same handful of culprits come up again and again:

Will it fail the MOT?

Yes — an engine management light that stays on is an automatic MOT fail under the current rules. If your test is coming up, get the fault read and fixed first rather than paying for a retest.

Why a proper diagnostic beats a code reader

A £15 code reader tells you which sensor complained; it doesn’t tell you why. A misfire code can mean a coil, a plug, an injector, a vacuum leak or wiring. We read the code, then test the actual components so you pay to fix the cause once — not to replace parts one by one.

Fixed diagnostic feeAgreed before we start, and knocked off the repair if you go ahead with us.

Questions, answered

Can I drive with the engine management light on?

If it’s solid amber and the car drives normally, drive gently and book it in soon. If it’s flashing or red, or the car has lost power, pull over and call us — driving on can wreck the catalytic converter or worse.

Will disconnecting the battery reset the light?

It may turn the light off temporarily, but the fault is still there and the light will come back. It also wipes the stored code that tells us what’s wrong, which makes diagnosis slower and dearer.

How much does it cost to diagnose an engine light?

We charge a fixed diagnostic fee, agreed up front. If you have the repair done with us, we take the diagnostic off the bill.

The light came on after filling up — what happened?

Nine times out of ten it’s the fuel cap not sealing, or (rarely) the wrong fuel. Re-seat the cap firmly; if the light doesn’t clear itself within a few drives, come and see us.
